Who are we?

We're glad you've found us and taken the time to ask who we are and what we do! The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Mendon and Uxbridge is a lay-led, diverse faith community dedicated to inclusivity, justice, and community.

Our community warmly welcomes all people without discrimination on the basis of race, gender, age, color, national origin, ethnic background, socioeconomic status, marital status, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity. As Unitarian Universalists, we affirm the inherent worth and dignity of every person.

We are committed to making our activities available to all members of the community. Our building is wheelchair accessible. We host a variety of community organizations. These include Centerpoint Driving Academy, an  AA meeting, and the Jean Cahill Social Recreation Dances.

We are a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA),  which has international headquarters in Boston. However, each congregation is autonomous, and its members alone make all its institutional decisions.

The UCMU strives to:

  • Provide a forum for the free expression of religious ideas in the Blackstone Valley.
  • Support members in their life journeys including births, coming of age, marriages, and deaths.
  • Create a safe and welcoming environment for our marginalized community members.
  • Honor the commitment of the church community to the self and that of the self to the church community and the world-at-large.
  • Cultivate and appreciate diversity of mind, body, and spirit.
  • Build on our history and also to live fully in the present. To work for a more healthy, inclusive, and prosperous future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at uumendu@comcast.net if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Being a lay led faith means that we have no resident minister and our services are instead led each week either by a visiting minister or a member of our congregation. This gives us the flexibility to lead ourselves as a community and to hear new wisdom from outside of it regularly. As a result, our services are more diverse in theme and spiritual background week to week.

Unitarianism is a religious non-specific faith practice. We draw from our heritages of freedom, reason, hope, and courage, building on the foundation of love. You can find more general information on the UUA website here.

Unitarian Universalism is historically based in Christianity. However, the faith as it stands today does not follow a specific religious dogma. Instead we hold up the Seven Principles as our guiding light while seeking wisdom from many faiths and philosophies.
